How we work
Editorial policy
The rules every page on this site is written under.

Independence
Cam & Canopy is published by Iron Mako Media and funded by affiliate commissions, mostly through Amazon Associates. No brand pays for placement, no brand reviews a page before it runs, and commission rates are not an input to any score or ranking. If a brand-direct affiliate program is ever joined, the same rule applies: the link changes, the ranking doesn't. We don't accept free products in exchange for coverage, and we don't currently accept review units at all.
How products are chosen
A product appears on the site if it is real, currently sold, and sourced to a maker's product page we can link. We start from the models named by the independent testers we follow (Trailcampro's annual shootout and reviews, Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, TechGearLab), each brand's current lineup pages, and the specific model names people search for. We leave off products with no manufacturer website, because we can't verify their specs, plans or warranty, and products the maker no longer lists.
Sourcing
- Specs come from the maker's product page, read on the date shown on each product card, and each value links to that page.
- Plan prices come from the maker's plan page, with an “as of” date and a link. If we can't read a public plan page, we don't print a price.
- Independent measurements are attributed to whoever made them, in the sentence that uses them (“Trailcampro measured 0.73 s”).
- Amazon prices, ratings and review counts are not quoted. Prices change daily; the site shows “Check price on Amazon” until a live feed exists.
- Photos are licensed stock, labeled as such on product cards, and never presented as a photo of the specific product.
Claims we withhold
We haven't field-tested the cameras on this site and we don't say we have. We don't list credentials, awards, testimonials or years of experience for the author beyond what the publisher has provided. We don't invent a spec a maker doesn't publish; a dash means unpublished. Where a claim is an editorial judgment (whether deer notice low-glow flash, for example), the page says it's a judgment.
Scores
Every score is a weighted mean of published rubric metrics (How We Rank), computed by the same code that renders the page. Scores are visible editorial content and are never marked up as a product rating in structured data.
Corrections
Send an error to mike@blackironathletics.com or the contact form with the page and the figure. We check it against the source. If we were wrong, we fix it and add a dated note in the page's “Corrections & updates” log. If the source changed (a plan price, a discontinued model), we update the page and the “as of” date.
Update cadence
- Plan prices: re-read periodically and whenever a reader reports a change.
- Roundup lineups: refreshed each new-model season (January) and when a brand replaces a generation.
- Discontinued products: removed when the maker's page goes away, with the change logged.
Language and audience
US English, plain punctuation, no exclamation points. Written for people who already run cameras; we skip “what is a trail camera” and lead with the decision.
