Why the Python is the default
Master Lock's page states the numbers most cable makers don't: "6ft (1.8m) long," "5/16in (8mm) diameter," "braided steel for strength and flexibility," "vinyl coated cable for superior weather and scratch resistance," "integrated pin tumbler keyed locking mechanism for superior pick resistance," "0.95 lb," "Limited Lifetime Warranty." The adjustable head is the feature: it cinches the cable tight at any length, so there's no slack loop for a knife to work in and no need to match cable length to trunk. Keyed vs combination
How to run a cable so it holds
- Through the box, not around the camera. A cable around a plastic camera body is cut in one pass; a cable through a steel box's cable slot has to go through steel.
- Around the trunk, not a limb. A limb can be sawed; a 14-inch trunk can't in the time a thief has.
- Cinch it. The Python's adjustable head lets you pull all the slack out. Slack is where a blade gets leverage.
- Lock head against the tree, out of reach. Rotate the head to the back of the trunk so it can't be worked at from the trail.
- Add the lag bolt. A CAMLOCKbox lag-bolted to the tree plus a Python through it is the strongest setup short of a GPS camera; see best security boxes.
A 5/16 in braided cable stops a knife and a pair of pliers. It delays bolt cutters; it doesn't defeat them. That's the honest limit of any cable lock, and the reason the theft guide treats it as one layer of four.

Buyer's guide: cables
Length
Six feet wraps a trunk up to about 20 inches in diameter with room to cinch. Bigger trees or a box plus a panel on one cable need more; Master Lock sells the Python in other lengths.
One key or many
Keyed-alike sets save carrying a ring. Ask for them if you're buying four.
Cable the panel too
A solar panel on a bracket is as stealable as the camera. HME's 5,000 mAh panel has a Python mount built in; run the same cable through both. See best solar panels.
Vinyl matters
A bare cable saws into bark over a season and rusts; the Python's vinyl coat is why it lasts. Whatever you buy, buy coated.

Will a cable lock stop a trail camera thief?
It stops a knife and pliers and delays bolt cutters. Run it through a steel box around the trunk and cinched tight, and most opportunists move on. It won't stop someone who came with cutters and time.
Python cable or padlock for a trail camera box?
Both: the Python secures the box to the tree, the padlock secures the door. CAMLOCKbox boxes accept either or both.
