Under $30: no questions needed
Every trail camera takes AA batteries or has a jack, every one can be cabled to a tree, and nearly every one has a 1/4-20 thread on the bottom. So four gifts are safe with zero knowledge of their gear:
- Lithium AAs. Cameras eat 8 to 16 at a time. Energizer rates the Ultimate Lithium from -40°F to 140°F with a leak-proof guarantee; that's the battery Trailcampro uses for its 31-month estimates, and the one most people skip because of the price. Buying it for them is the point.
- A Python cable. Master Lock's 8419DPF: 6 ft, 5/16 in braided steel, vinyl coated, pin-tumbler keyed, lifetime warranty. CAMLOCKbox and HME both design around it. Someone with four cameras has three cables.
- A tree mount. HME's $15.99 Tree Mount screws in, rotates 360°, tilts 120°. It turns a crooked trunk into a usable set. If they hunt public land with no-screw rules, the Strap-On holder ($27.99) instead.
- An SD card. 32GB SDHC, U3/V30. Unless they run a Moultrie Edge (built-in memory) it'll get used.
Under $130: one question needed
"Which brand of camera do you run?" unlocks the gift they want most and won't buy: power. Tactacam owners want the Folding Solar Panel ($99.99 on Tactacam's page, fits every Reveal and most 12V cameras). Spypoint owners want the LIT-22 pack ($49.99) or the 10W SPLB-22 panel ($129.99). What not to buy
- A no-name Amazon camera. No maker page, no plan page, no warranty page. It'll be re-gifted.
- A cellular camera from a brand they don't run. Two apps, two bills. Ask first.
- Alkaline batteries in bulk. The thing they'll be replacing in January.
- A security box without knowing the model. CAMLOCKbox boxes are model-specific; a Flex box doesn't fit a Flex-M2.

Cameras we claim to have field-tested: none we don't own
Plenty of sites say they hung every camera on this list in a tree for a season. We don't say that, and we say so on every page. What we do instead: read the maker's published trigger speed, flash type, battery configuration and detection range; verify each brand's plan tiers on its own plan page and compute the real monthly cost at one and four cameras; cite the independent shootouts (Trailcampro, Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, TechGearLab) as their measurements, never ours; and score every pick on a public rubric. Every figure links to where it came from.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not lab results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
