Integrated panel vs a panel you aim

A camera-mounted panel faces wherever the camera faces. That's the whole problem. The camera wants to face the trail, north-ish to avoid sunrise glare; the panel wants to face south. On a field edge with open sky, an integrated panel works. Under canopy, it's a decoration on top of a lithium pack that will run down at the same rate as any other pack.

The alternative is a camera with a 12V or USB-C jack and a separate panel on a bracket you can aim: Spypoint's 10W SPLB-22 with a 15,000 mAh bank, Tactacam's Folding panel, Moultrie's 3.4W Solar Power Pack II. The five, side by side

Trigger and flash decide the order at the top. The Flex-S-Dark and the Browning are the only two here with no-glow LEDs; the Browning's 0.2 s trigger is the fastest published figure of the five, but its plan prices are behind a login, so it can't outrank a camera whose running cost we can verify. Both Moultries are low-glow at 0.40 s. The Bushnell is the one Trailcampro measured, and its 0.73 s trigger and 44.8 s recovery put it last despite the cleverest panel of the group.

What the makers publish about the battery

Only Moultrie states a capacity: the Edge Solar's pack is 2,600 mAh / 28 Wh (the two are compared in full in Edge Solar vs Flex-S-Dark). Spypoint says the Flex-S-Dark's battery "replaces up to 1,000 AA batteries" without a capacity. Browning lists an 8-AA backup tray and a 12V jack alongside the panel but no internal figure. Bushnell says the panel's lithium cells "maintain full charge for up to 70 images per day with adequate sun." Those are four different kinds of claim, and none of them is a runtime you can plan a season around. Treat every integrated-solar camera as "a lithium pack that recharges when the sun is on it," and estimate the pack's runtime the way battery life explained describes.

The Browning's three power routes (panel, 8 AA, 12V) make it the safest bet if you're not sure how much sun the set gets: the AAs carry it through a cloudy month. The Moultrie Edge Solar and Edge 4 Solar have a USB-C input, so a POWER MAG III can back up the panel. The Flex-S-Dark has no AA tray listed; the built-in battery is the whole power plan. Buyer's guide: solar without disappointment

Count sun hours, not "solar"

A trail camera draws the most power at night, sending IR photos. The panel refills that during the day. If the panel sees three hours of direct sun, it refills a little; if it sees none, it's a pack. The maker's "months of battery life" claims all assume sun.

Match the plan, again

Solar doesn't change the plan math. The Flex-S-Dark rides on Spypoint's free tier and $10/mo annual unlimited; the Moultries need $8.99/mo per camera; Browning's prices we can't read. The plans compared page has every verified tier.

Security boxes and panels
