Best Covert trail cameras: one range, three price points and a brand that will not publish a detection range

Covert has shrunk to a single current family - the Interceptor, the Interceptor Pro and the Interceptor Solar - and most of it reads sold out on Covert's own store. The Solar is the one to buy, and it is the only Covert camera anyone outside the company has actually tested.

What Covert actually sells in 2026

Start with the thing nobody writing about this brand says out loud: Covert is smaller than it used to be. The old covertscoutingcameras.com address now redirects to feradyne.com, Covert's parent company, and the shop there lists one current cellular family. That family is the Interceptor at $129.99, the Interceptor Pro at $159.99 and the Interceptor Solar at $179.99. Both non-solar bodies read sold out on Covert's own store; the Solar reads as a preorder shipping 26 October 2026.

The accessories tell the same story. On the day we checked, the Covert solar panel, the SD card case, the stock replacement antenna, both tree mounts and every SIM card on the store read sold out. One SD card listing was in stock. That is the entire Covert catalog that is actually buyable from Covert.

So the honest version of “best Covert trail camera” is a three-camera page, and buying one means buying it somewhere other than Covert. All three Interceptor bodies were live on Amazon when we checked, at prices at or below Covert's own list. That is where the buy links on this page go, and it is the only reason this page can rank three cameras instead of one.

What Covert still does well is worth naming. The Interceptor line keeps the same 0.4-second trigger across all three price points, which is unusual - most brands slow the cheap body down. GPS and the upgraded antenna are standard rather than upsells. And the two-year warranty is longer than Spypoint's or Moultrie's. For a reader who already runs a Covert and wants to stay on the Covert app, this is a coherent range.

How we ranked them

The rubric is the same one every cellular camera on this site is scored against, and it is published at how we rank: trigger speed and recovery, night image quality, battery and solar life, real monthly plan cost, detection range and field of view, and the app and setup. Covert makes two of those six hard to score, which is itself a finding:

  • Trigger speed and recovery. Covert publishes 0.4 s on all three. It publishes no recovery time on any of them, so none of the three can be credited for recovery.
  • Night image quality. Judged on published flash range and the one independent night photo on record - a doe at over 110 ft in Field & Stream's test of the Solar.
  • Battery and solar life. The Solar earns the only high score here, on measured behavior over 60 days. The two AA bodies are marked down because Covert's own product-page reviews repeatedly complain about battery life, including one owner reporting four weeks.
  • Plan cost. Covert publishes no tier table, so no Covert body can score well on this axis. The only figure anyone has put in print is the $4.99 per month the Field & Stream tester paid.
  • Detection range and field of view. Covert publishes neither, for any model. Every Covert camera takes the same low score here, and that is not a guess - it is the absence of a number.
  • App, setup and reliability. QR-code setup, GPS and the CovertWireless app are consistent across the range.

Score7.4/106.4/106.2/10
Every figure here is Covert's own published spec from its product pages at feradyne.com, except the Solar's tested solar and night-range notes, which are Field & Stream's. 'Not published' means exactly that - Covert states no detection range for any model.

Read down the trigger row and the three cameras are identical. Read down the flash row and the only real step is the base Interceptor's 75 ft against 90 ft on the other two. Read down the resolution row and you get 16MP, 20MP and 32MP - the axis Covert actually prices on. And read the plan row and you find the same blank on all three.

That shape matters for the buying decision. If you are choosing between the Pro and the Solar, you are not buying a better sensor circuit; you are buying a panel and a higher pixel count. If you are choosing between the base and the Pro, you are buying 15 ft of flash and 1080p instead of 720p transmission. Nobody is buying a faster camera.

The one independent test

Field & Stream ran an Interceptor Solar for 60 days in southeast Colorado and published the results in March 2026. It is the only third-party field evidence that exists for any current Covert camera, so it carries real weight here.

  • The battery stayed above 60% on open plots and recovered to 80% daily even where the camera sat in shade.
  • The camera photographed a doe at over 110 ft at night - further than Covert's own 90 ft flash claim.
  • It survived 50 mph winds, hail, extreme heat and rain over the test without a reported failure.
  • The tester's two complaints: the body is bulkier than most cellular competitors, and the panel needs an external cord that makes a discreet set harder.
  • The tested unit ran on a $4.99 per month plan.

We have not run this camera ourselves and do not claim to have. What that test does is settle the one question a spec sheet cannot answer about a solar camera: whether the panel actually keeps up. On this body, over two months, in shade, it did.

The two numbers Covert will not publish

Detection range. No current Covert product page states one. For a brand selling cameras on real-time alerts, that is a strange omission - the detection circuit is what decides whether you get the alert at all. Compare that to Bushnell's CORE bodies, where an independent lab measured 80 ft at 42.4 degrees and 70 ft at 33.6 degrees and the two cameras turned out to be meaningfully different animals.

Plan prices. Covert runs its own CovertWireless subscription and publishes no tier table on any page we could read. Retailers quote figures from $4.99 for a small photo allowance up to $34.99 for very large ones, and a per-camera add-on near $5, but those are retailer pages reciting old marketing, not Covert's price list. We do not print numbers we cannot source to the company charging them. The same rule applies to Browning, Bushnell and GardePro, and the whole cross-brand picture is in cellular trail camera plans compared.

What a Covert plan costs

The one defensible figure is $4.99 a month, because a tester paid it and printed it. Treat that as the entry tier for a modest photo allowance on one camera, and assume it rises with volume the way every other brand's does.

Run the arithmetic the way this site always does: the camera is the small number. Four cameras at a $5 entry tier is $240 across a year, which is more than any single Interceptor costs. If you are building toward four or more cameras, the plan architecture matters more than the body, and two alternatives beat Covert outright on that axis - Moultrie's per-camera pricing (see Moultrie Mobile plans explained) and Cuddeback's single-hub model, where only the hub pays for data. That one is laid out in best Cuddeback trail cameras.

Where to actually buy one

On the day of writing: the Interceptor Solar was in stock on Amazon and a preorder at Covert; the Interceptor Pro was in stock on Amazon and sold out at Covert; the base Interceptor was in stock on Amazon with 18 units showing and sold out at Covert. Prices on Amazon were at or under Covert's list on all three.

That is unusual enough to say plainly: for this brand, right now, the marketplace is the primary channel and the maker's store is the backup. Every buy button on this page resolves to the live listing, and the price you see is the price at the moment the page was built, not a figure typed in once and left to rot.

Covert against the rest of the field

The best Covert against two mainstream cellular cameras in the same money. The point of the table is the detection-range row and the plan row.

The Interceptor Solar holds its own on trigger speed and beats both on resolution. Where it loses is documentation: Moultrie and Tactacam both publish a detection range and a plan price, and Covert publishes neither. For a reader fixing one weakness at a time - which is who this site is written for - that is a decision-grade difference, not a quibble. If you want the ranked field rather than a brand page, start at best cellular trail cameras.

What we did not rank

Covert Blackhawk 20 LTE. Still listed on Amazon around $99.99 with a dozen units showing, and it is a carrier-locked Verizon body from an earlier generation. We did not rank it because Covert has no current product page for it, which means there is no maker spec sheet to cite for a single figure. Buying a carrier-locked camera also throws away the automatic network selection that is the main reason modern cell cams work in marginal signal - see best cellular trail camera for low signal.

Covert solar panel, mounts and SIM cards. Sold out across the board on Covert's own store at our check. If you need a panel for an Interceptor, the universal 12V options in best trail camera solar panels are a better bet than waiting for Covert stock.

Bundle and multi-pack listings. Several Amazon listings sell Interceptor variants in other configurations. A two-pack is not the camera this page ranks, and we never point a card at a listing whose title does not match the model in the copy.

What the spec sheet supports

  • The one camera on this page a third party actually put in the woods: 60 days through hail, 50 mph winds and extreme heat with no failure reported
  • Solar panel included rather than sold separately, and it kept the pack near full even in shade
  • 32MP and 2K transmission is the highest resolution Covert currently sells
  • 90 ft published flash range, and a night photo at over 110 ft in the Field & Stream test
  • $179.99 at Covert against about $190 on Amazon, where it is actually in stock

Where it falls short

  • Covert's own store lists it as a preorder shipping 2026-10-26, so Amazon is the only place to buy it today
  • Field & Stream calls it larger and bulkier than most cellular competitors, with a solar cord that complicates a discreet set
  • Covert publishes no detection range, so how wide and far the sensor reaches is unknown
  • No public plan tier table: the $4.99 figure is a tester's, not a published price list

Skip this if…

…you need a small, low-profile body on a pressured public-land trail; this is the bulkiest camera Covert sells and the panel cord makes it worse.

Buyer's guide: buying a Covert in 2026

Buy the Solar unless you genuinely cannot

It is the only Covert body with independent evidence, the only one with a panel, the highest resolution in the range, and the only one Covert itself is still restocking. The $50 premium over the Pro buys the single thing that most often kills a cellular camera: the battery. The general case for panels is in best solar cellular trail cameras.

Treat the AA bodies as seasonal cameras

Covert's own product-page reviewers are unusually consistent about battery life on the non-solar bodies. Plan on lithium AAs, not alkaline, and plan on a mid-season swap. Which cells and why: best batteries for trail cameras.

Do not pay for megapixels here

16MP, 20MP and 32MP across one range, with no stated sensor size and no detection figure, is a pricing ladder rather than an image-quality ladder. The useful differences on this page are the panel, the flash range and the transmitted video resolution. Why the MP number is the weakest spec on any trail camera: trail camera megapixels explained.

Watch the transmitted resolution, not the recorded one

The base Interceptor records 1080p and sends 720p. What reaches your phone is the lower figure, and on a cellular camera the transmitted image is the product. If video is the reason you are buying, read best trail cameras for video before you commit.

Assume you will buy it on Amazon

Two of the three cameras cannot be bought from Covert at all today. That is not a reason to avoid the brand, but it does mean checking the listing title matches the exact variant - Solar, Pro or base - before you check out. The flash range and the transmitted resolution both change between them.

Budget the plan before the body

You cannot read Covert's plan prices in advance, so decide what you are willing to spend per camera per month first, then confirm it in the CovertWireless app before you deploy. If that is unacceptable, buy a brand that publishes - the comparison is in cellular trail camera plans compared.

How we scored this

The research behind these picks

Every pick here is built from documented evidence: the maker's published trigger speed, flash type, battery configuration and detection range; each brand's plan tiers verified on its own plan page and turned into the real monthly cost at one and four cameras; the independent shootouts (Trailcampro, Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, TechGearLab) cited by name for the measurements they published; and a public rubric applied the same way to every model. Every figure links to where it came from, so you can check our work in one click.

Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Corrections & updates

  • Published. Every Covert spec read on Covert's own product pages at feradyne.com; the 60-day field-test figures are Field & Stream's. Covert publishes no detection range and no plan tier table for any model, so neither is stated as a Covert figure. Live prices and stock read on Amazon the same day: Interceptor Solar and Interceptor Pro in stock, base Interceptor 18 units, all three sold out or on preorder at Covert's own store.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best Covert trail camera?

The Covert Interceptor Solar. It is the highest-resolution body Covert sells at 32MP, it keeps the range's 0.4 s trigger and 90 ft flash range, and it is the only Covert camera with independent field evidence: Field & Stream ran one for 60 days and saw the battery hold above 60% on open ground and recover to 80% daily in shade.

Are Covert trail cameras any good?

The hardware holds up - one 0.4 s trigger across the whole range, GPS and an upgraded antenna as standard, a two-year warranty. The problems are documentation and availability: Covert publishes no detection range and no plan prices for any model, and most of its own store reads sold out.

How much is a Covert cellular plan?

Covert does not publish a tier table on any page we could read. The only sourced figure is the $4.99 per month that Field & Stream's tester paid on an Interceptor Solar. Expect it to rise with photo volume, and confirm the price in the CovertWireless app before you deploy the camera.

What is the difference between the Covert Interceptor, Interceptor Pro and Interceptor Solar?

All three share a 0.4 s trigger, 8 AA cells, GPS and QR-code setup. The base Interceptor is 16MP with 75 ft of flash and transmits 720p video. The Pro is 20MP with 90 ft of flash and transmits 1080p. The Solar is 32MP with 90 ft of flash, 2K transmission and an included solar panel.

Is Covert the same company as covertscoutingcameras.com?

Yes. Covert Scouting Cameras is a Feradyne Outdoors brand, and covertscoutingcameras.com now redirects to feradyne.com, where the current product pages and prices live.

Does Covert make a no-glow camera?

The Interceptor Solar is described as no-glow and Field & Stream's tester reported the flash stayed undetectable. Covert does not state the IR wavelength for any model, so if an invisible flash is the requirement, the ranked no-glow field is a safer place to shop: best no-glow cellular trail cameras.
