Cellular trail camera not sending pictures: the diagnosis, in the order that finds it fastest

From the couch: plan, cap, activation, schedule

1. Plan status. Open the app. An expired card, a lapsed annual plan, or a camera never assigned a plan is the most common answer by a wide margin. Moultrie: "all cellular connected devices require a paid subscription." Reconyx: "active plan required for operation."
2. Monthly cap. Metered plans stop sending when the cap is hit and resume next month. Spypoint Free is 100 photos, Basic 250, Standard 1,000; Tactacam Starter 250, Intermediate 500; Moultrie Standard 1,000 images; Stealth Cam Standard 600. A feeder set at dusk can hit 250 in a week. The camera keeps recording to its card. Fix: raise the tier, lengthen the delay, turn on AI filtering. See plans compared.
3. Activation. A new camera hung before the app finished registering it on the network never connects. Fix: bring it home, power it on with signal, finish activation, re-hang. Detail in how to set up a trail camera.
4. Transmit schedule. Set to a daily window, or accidentally to off. Check the camera's settings in the app; on some brands, a settings change only takes effect at the next check-in.
5. Delay and sensitivity. A 30-minute delay or a sensitivity of "low" on a slow trail means few triggers, not failed sends. Look at the card count before deciding the camera is broken.

Signal and carrier

At the camera: card, batteries, antenna, firmware

1. The card. A full or errored card stops photos, which stops sending. Pull it, check the count, format in the camera. Moultrie Edge has no card; skip this. See the SD card guide.
2. Batteries. Transmission is the biggest power draw after the flash. A camera at 30% will often take photos and fail to send them, because the radio needs a burst the sagging cells can't give. Fresh lithiums; see best batteries.
3. Antenna. Folded down, unscrewed by a raccoon, or packed in branches. Up and clear.
4. Firmware. Spypoint and Tactacam push updates over the air; a camera that missed one can lose its connection profile. Check for an update in the app at the house.
5. Camera orientation. The modem's antenna has a direction. Facing the trunk on the far side from the tower costs bars. Rotate the set if the tower direction is known.

Brand notes

• Tactacam Reveal: "auto carrier selection" on the 3.0 line; if a camera sits on one carrier with no signal, a power cycle forces a rescan. Xtra features (HD requests, on-demand) need the add-on active.
• Spypoint Flex: check which tier the camera is on and the month's photo count in the app; the free tier's 100 is the most common cap people hit. The Flex-M is single-SIM.
• Moultrie Edge: no card, so if it isn't sending, nothing is stored where you can reach it; check plan and power (POWER MAG charge) first. Auto Connect across four networks.
• Stealth Cam Deceptor Max: 16 AA is a lot of cells to sag; the false-image AI can also filter more than expected, which looks like "no photos."
• Browning Defender: two SIMs, you choose the network; try the other one. Works as an SD camera when the plan is paused, so photos are on the card.
• Bushnell CelluCORE: dual SIM AT&T/Verizon; Trailcampro measured a 44.8 s recovery, so "not sending" at a busy feeder can be the camera catching up.

When it's the camera

If the plan is active, the cap isn't hit, the card has fresh photos, the batteries are new, a phone shows two bars on a carrier the camera supports, and the firmware is current, and it still won't send after a power cycle: it's the modem, and that's a warranty call (Spypoint 2 years, Tactacam 1 year from activation, Bushnell 2 years limited, Reconyx 5). If instead the answer was "there's no signal here on any carrier," the fix is a different set, a passive antenna, or an SD camera for that spot.
