Trail camera SD cards: the right size, the right format, and why the camera says 'SD error'
The card is the cheapest part of the setup and the most common point of failure. Size limits, speed classes, formatting in the camera, the three causes of 'SD error,' and reading cards on a phone in the field.

What size card
Published limits from the cameras we rank: Browning Strike Force Pro X and Spec Ops HP5 Ultra "up to 512GB SDXC"; Stealth Cam DS4K Ultimate "128GB"; Tactacam Reveal Ultra 16GB internal with an optional card slot; Bushnell, Spypoint and GardePro don't state a limit on the pages we read. Moultrie Edge cameras have no card slot at all. A 32GB card fits under every stated limit and is SDHC (FAT32), which every camera reads; 64GB and up is SDXC (exFAT), which some cameras handle and some don't. For a photo camera, 32GB is thousands of images; for a 4K video camera you visit monthly, 64 or 128GB if the manual allows it.
Speed class: what 4K needs
Class 10 / U1 is enough for photos and 1080p. V30 (30 MB/s minimum sustained write) is the class for 4K video: Bushnell's CORE 4K models, Stealth Cam's DS4K, GardePro's A60. A slow card in a 4K camera drops frames or throws a write error. The SanDisk Extreme PRO 32GB is U3/V30, which covers everything on this site. Faster than V30 buys nothing in a trail camera.
Format in the camera, every time
"SD error" and "not reading": the three causes
- Wrong format. Computer-formatted, or SDXC in a camera that wants SDHC. Fix: format in the camera; if it still fails, try a 32GB card.
- Over the limit. A 256GB card in a camera rated to 128GB. Fix: read the manual's limit and buy inside it.
- Worn or fake. Cards wear out, especially cheap ones written to for years, and counterfeit high-capacity cards report a size they don't have. Fix: a new name-brand card. If a second card fails in the same camera, the slot's contacts may be corroded; a pencil eraser on the card contacts and a look at the slot are the last checks before support.
Cellular owners see a variant: the camera stops sending but keeps recording, or vice versa. That's a plan or signal problem, not a card problem; see not sending pictures.
Reading cards on a phone
An SD-to-USB-C or SD-to-Lightning reader lets you check a card at the tree without a laptop. On iPhone, photos open in the Files app (Trailcampro notes this as the workflow for GardePro's cameras: "you must go to your files app to view photos"); on Android, in Files or the gallery. A card swap with a viewer takes a minute and saves the walk back. Carry two cards per camera: pull one, insert the other, format the new one in the camera before you leave.
The no-card option
Moultrie's Edge line has built-in memory and no card slot: "no SD card required; images and videos are stored and managed in the Moultrie App." Tactacam's Reveal Ultra has 16GB internal storage with an optional card.
