Tactacam Reveal X 4.0 review: the fastest Reveal, and the slowest second photo

Trailcampro measured this camera at 0.29 seconds to the first frame and 14.1 months of photo battery - both the best figures in the Reveal 4.0 line. Then it measured 11.1 seconds before it can take another picture, which is the number that decides where you hang it.

Who it's for

One buyer in particular: somebody already running cellular cameras whose actual, repeated problem is walking in to change batteries. That is what this camera fixes, and it fixes it better than anything else Tactacam sells. Fourteen months of photo-mode runtime on a set of lithium AAs means a camera you hang in August and genuinely forget about until the following fall.

It is also a reasonable first cellular camera for someone who wants Live View without buying the flagship, because the X 4.0 carries the same streaming capability as the Pro 4.0 for about $70 less.

It is the wrong camera for two readers. If you watch a travel corridor where deer move through in groups, the recovery time will cost you most of the herd. And if the set is pressured public land or a gate you are watching for people, the flash is low-glow only - there is no no-glow mode to switch to.

0.29 seconds: the best number here

Tactacam publishes no trigger speed for the 4.0 line at all, which is worth saying plainly: every speed figure on this page is Trailcampro's measurement, not a maker claim. Trailcampro measured 0.29 s on the X 4.0 against 0.4 s on the Pro 4.0, which makes the cheaper camera the quicker one.

At under three tenths of a second, this is genuinely fast for a cellular camera - inside the range where a deer walking past the lens still lands in the frame rather than exiting it. It sits behind Browning's published 0.25 s and ahead of almost everything else we cover. Detection measured 90 ft at a 35.3-degree angle, ten feet further than the Pro 4.0, though that angle is narrow enough that aiming matters: a camera with a 35-degree cone pointed down a trail sees far, and a camera with the same cone pointed across one sees very little. Detection range explained covers how to read the two numbers together.

Eleven seconds: the number that matters more

Trailcampro measured 11.1 s to recover between photos, and 5.2 s between videos. This is the single fact that should decide whether you buy this camera, and it is not on any box.

Eleven seconds is a long time in the woods. A doe walks through at a normal pace, the camera fires, and the three deer behind her cross the frame while it is still writing and queuing the upload. On a feeder or a scrape that is invisible, because animals stop and stay inside the detection zone long enough to be photographed again. On a crossing it means one photograph per group, and you will not know what you missed.

Battery: 14.1 months, and why that is the real headline

Trailcampro estimated 14.1 months in photo mode and 4.1 months in video mode on twelve Energizer Ultimate Lithium AAs. That photo figure is the longest measured runtime of any cellular camera on this site, and it beats the Pro 4.0's 12.4 months on the same test.

Spend a moment on what that buys. Battery life on a cellular camera is not a convenience spec, it is an access spec: every battery change is a trip in, with your scent, at a time of year you would rather not be walking to that tree. A camera that runs a full season and then most of the next one is a camera you can put somewhere awkward and leave alone. That is a bigger practical upgrade for most people than any imaging improvement on this page.

The caveats are ordinary. Fourteen months assumes lithium cells, not alkaline, and assumes photo mode - switch to video and you are at roughly four months. There is also a DC 12V-2A jack and compatibility with Tactacam's FlexPack R5 and R10 packs and its folding solar panel, so the runtime can be extended further. Which cells and which panels: best batteries for trail cameras and best trail camera solar panels.

Low glow only, and no screen

Two real limitations, both of which are the difference between this camera and its more expensive sibling.

The flash is low-glow infrared with a 96 ft rated range. Low glow means a faint red shine at the lens when it fires - visible to a deer looking straight at it, and visible to a person. The Pro 4.0 lets you switch between no-glow and low-glow in the app; the X 4.0 does not. For a food plot or a private feeder that is a non-issue. For a public-land set or a gate camera it is the reason to spend more. See no-glow vs low-glow and best no-glow cellular trail cameras.

There is also no screen on the camera. Aiming, test shots and every Live View session go through the phone. In practice this means you cannot confirm a frame without unlocking a phone in the cold with gloves on, and it means a dead phone battery at the truck is a wasted trip. The Pro 4.0's side-facing LCD is the fix. Cameras you can aim without a phone at all are listed in best trail cameras with a viewing screen.

Live View and what it actually costs

Live View Mode is the headline feature of the 4.0 line and the reason most people are reading about this camera. Tactacam's wording is that you “see the action as it unfolds” - an on-demand stream from the camera, triggered from the app.

It works and it is genuinely good; sessions are unlimited rather than metered in minutes once you have the add-on. The part the marketing is quiet about is that the add-on is $6 a month or $72 a year, per camera, on top of the data plan. One camera watched live for a year is $72 above whatever the plan costs. A four-camera set is $288 a year in Live View alone.

What it costs to run

Tactacam's Reveal plans start at $5 a month ($55 a year) for 250 photos and run to $13 a month ($120 a year) for unlimited, with multi-camera discounts and no activation fee. That is mid-field: more than Spypoint, which has a free tier and a $10-a-month annual unlimited, and less than Moultrie's $12.99 unlimited.

Pro$13/mo$120/yr ($10/mo)Unlimited photos+$12/mo per additional camera
  • Xtra add-on (account-wide): $4/mo for 1 camera, $7/mo for 2, $9/mo for 3+. Unlimited HD photo and video requests, multi-shot delivery, enhanced mapping, unlimited on-demand, TactaColor. Requires an active subscription; Tactacam marks the pricing 'available for a limited time only'.
Per camera, with a discounted price for each additional camera; the Xtra add-on is one flat fee for every camera on the account. Prices as of Sep 21, 2026, read from Tactacam Reveal's plan page. Confirm before you buy; brands change plans without notice.

Add Live View and the comparison changes shape - $13 plus $6 is $19 a month for one camera watched live, which is the most expensive way to run a single trail camera that we price anywhere on this site. Every brand's tiers side by side are in cellular trail camera plans compared, and the Reveal-specific detail is in Tactacam Reveal plans explained.

X 4.0 or Pro 4.0?

This is the only comparison most buyers actually need, and the answer is not the usual “buy the better one.”

The X 4.0 is faster (0.29 s vs 0.4 s), sees further (90 ft vs 80 ft), lasts longer (14.1 months vs 12.4) and costs about $70 less. The Pro 4.0 gives you two things the X cannot do at any price: a selectable no-glow flash, and a screen on the camera. Both of those are situational rather than general upgrades.

So: private ground, feeders and plots, and you want the money back? X 4.0. Public land, a gate, or you hate setting up a camera through a phone? Pro 4.0. The full side-by-side is at Tactacam Reveal 4 vs Reveal 4 Pro.

Price and stock on 2026-10-30

The Reveal X 4.0 read $129.99 and in stock on Amazon when we checked on 2026-10-30, under the Pro 4.0 at $159.99 and well under the Pro 4.0 Solar at $199.99. That is a fair price for the measured performance and it is the cheapest route into Live View that Tactacam sells.

Prices on this site are pulled live rather than typed, so the figure beside the buy button is the current one. Our standing position on this is simple: buy it wherever it is cheapest today, and if the live figure is missing, check before you commit rather than trusting a number a review wrote months ago.

What to buy instead

Three cameras beat it for three specific readers, and each one is a better buy than the X 4.0 for that person.

  • You need no-glow, or a screen. The Tactacam Reveal Pro 4.0. Same app, same Live View, selectable flash and a side LCD, for about $70 more.
  • You want the lowest running cost. The Spypoint Flex-Dark: dual no-glow and low-glow arrays, 100 ft, the top cellular finish in Trailcampro's 2026 flash-range shootout, and a free 100-photo tier underneath it. Stock was thin when we checked. See Browning vs Spypoint for where Spypoint's plans sit against the field.
  • You watch a trail crossing. The Moultrie Edge 3 Pro, winner of Trailcampro's 2026 cellular detection shootout, no-glow to 100 ft, around $99 - and not saddled with an eleven-second recovery.

What the spec sheet supports

  • 0.29 s measured trigger: the fastest figure on this page
  • 14.1 months of photo battery life measured by Trailcampro, the longest here
  • 90 ft measured detection, 10 ft further than the Pro 4.0
  • Same unlimited Live View sessions as the Pro for less camera money

Where it falls short

  • Low-glow only: a faint red glow at night, and no no-glow option in the app
  • No screen at all, so aiming and every Live View session go through the phone
  • 11.1-second measured photo recovery, the same weakness as the Pro 4.0
  • Live View is still $6/mo per camera on top of the data plan

Skip this if…

…the set is a pressured public-land trail or a gate you're watching for people; buy the selectable-flash Pro 4.0 or a 940nm no-glow camera instead.

How we scored this

The research behind these picks

Every pick here is built from documented evidence: the maker's published trigger speed, flash type, battery configuration and detection range; each brand's plan tiers verified on its own plan page and turned into the real monthly cost at one and four cameras; the independent shootouts (Trailcampro, Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, TechGearLab) cited by name for the measurements they published; and a public rubric applied the same way to every model. Every figure links to where it came from, so you can check our work in one click.

Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the Tactacam Reveal X 4.0's trigger speed?

Tactacam does not publish one. Trailcampro measured 0.29 s, which is the fastest figure in the Reveal 4.0 line and faster than the Pro 4.0's measured 0.4 s. The number that matters more is recovery, measured at 11.1 s between photos.

How long does the battery last in a Reveal X 4.0?

Trailcampro estimated 14.1 months in photo mode and 4.1 months in video mode on twelve Energizer Ultimate Lithium AAs - the longest measured photo runtime of any cellular camera we cover. It also takes a 12V external supply, a FlexPack R5 or R10, or a solar panel.

Is the Tactacam Reveal X 4.0 no glow?

No. It is low-glow infrared only, rated to 96 ft, so it shows a faint red glow when the flash fires. The Reveal Pro 4.0 is the body that lets you switch between no-glow and low-glow in the app.

How much does Live View cost on a Tactacam Reveal?

$6 a month, or $72 a year, per camera, on top of the data plan. Sessions are unlimited once you have the add-on rather than metered in minutes, so the cost is predictable - but a four-camera set is $288 a year in Live View alone.

Does the Reveal X 4.0 have a screen?

No. Aiming, test shots and Live View all go through the phone app. The Reveal Pro 4.0 adds a side-facing LCD if setting a camera up without a phone matters to you.

Is the Reveal X 4.0 or the Pro 4.0 better?

The X 4.0 is faster, sees further, lasts longer and costs about $70 less. The Pro 4.0 adds a selectable no-glow flash and a screen. Buy the X for private ground and feeders; buy the Pro for public land, gates, or if you dislike setting up a camera through a phone.

Is the Tactacam Reveal X 4.0 worth buying?

At around $130, for a feeder, food plot or mineral site where your real complaint is battery changes: yes, and it is the best value in the Reveal line. On a travel corridor: no - the eleven-second recovery means one photo per group, and the Moultrie Edge 3 Pro costs less and does not have that problem.
