What no-glow costs, and who fixes it
A 940nm LED is invisible to you and, in practice, to deer. It's also dimmer to the sensor than an 850nm low-glow LED, so a no-glow camera with the same array reaches less far and returns a softer image. Makers fix that three ways: more LEDs (Stealth Cam publishes 36 on the Deceptor Max 3.0), a better sensor (Bushnell's dual-sensor DS-4K with a dedicated night imager; GardePro's Sony Starvis A60), or a longer exposure, which blurs a moving deer. Published no-glow ranges, in order: Bushnell DS-4K 120 ft, Bushnell S-4K 110 ft, Moultrie Edge 3 Pro 100 ft, Spypoint Flex-Dark 100 ft, Browning Spec Ops 100 ft; GardePro doesn't publish a range for the T5NG or A60 (Trailcampro says the T5NG's flash "exceeds 100 feet"). Every one of those is a maximum. In a real set the useful reach is a third to half of it, which is why setting a no-glow camera 20 to 40 feet from the trail matters more than 20 feet of rated range.

That result is why the Flex-Dark sits ahead of the Spec Ops despite equal 100 ft claims, and why the T5NG outranks the A60 despite the A60's faster claimed trigger: one has a measurement behind it and the other doesn't.

Buyer's guide: no-glow that works
Set for the flash, not the detection
Detection range is what triggers the camera; flash range is what lights the deer. On a no-glow camera the second is always shorter in practice. Aim the camera so the trail crosses 20 to 40 feet out and broadside. The placement guide and height guide cover the geometry.
Feed the array
No-glow LEDs draw more current at full power. Lithium AAs (rated to -40°F) keep the flash bright when alkalines would sag. See best batteries.
If the pictures are still black
Nine times out of ten it's batteries, a fogged lens or a subject beyond the useful flash range, not the camera. Why your camera isn't taking night pictures walks the diagnosis.
When low-glow is the right answer

Cameras we claim to have field-tested: none we don't own
Plenty of sites say they hung every camera on this list in a tree for a season. We don't say that, and we say so on every page. What is the best no-glow trail camera?

What does no-glow mean on a trail camera?
The infrared LEDs emit at 940nm, a wavelength people and deer don't see as a red glow. Low-glow (850nm) LEDs show a faint red dot but reach farther for the same array size.
Do no-glow trail cameras take worse pictures?
At the same array size and sensor, yes: shorter reach and softer images. Better sensors (Bushnell's dual sensor) and larger arrays close the gap, which is what this ranking measures.
Do deer see low-glow trail cameras?
Some do, some don't; pressured mature bucks are the ones most often reported to react. No-glow removes the variable. See no-glow vs low-glow.
