Best budget cellular trail camera: the cheapest to run, not just to buy

"Budget" on a cellular camera means the plan, because the plan is forever. Here's the arithmetic, using each maker's listed camera price and plan page on September 21, 2026, for twelve months of the cheapest useful tier:

Two things jump out. Spypoint's free tier is real money: four Flex-M2s can scout all season for $320 total with no monthly bill, if 100 photos per camera per month is enough (it usually is for a feeder or a scrape; it isn't for a busy crossing). And Moultrie's camera discount is smaller than it looks, because the required $8.99/mo tier adds $108 per camera per year.

The free tier changes everything

Spypoint's plan page says it plainly: Free plan, 100 photos per month, $0, one plan per camera, no activation fees. Every other brand we verified requires a paid plan (Moultrie: "all cellular connected devices require a paid subscription"; Reconyx: "active plan required for operation"). Tactacam's cheapest is $5/mo or $55/yr for 250 photos. Stealth Cam's is $5/mo for 600 photos.

So the question for a budget buyer isn't "which camera is cheapest" but "can I live inside 100 photos a month?" If you set the camera to send a downsized photo per trigger and it's on a scrape or mineral site, 100 is often enough for a month of scouting. On a crossing or a feeder that runs at dusk, you'll blow through it in a week and Basic ($4/mo annual, 250 photos) or Standard ($7/mo annual, 1,000) is still cheaper than anything else. What a budget camera gives up

• Trigger speed. 0.4 s (Flex-M2) and 0.5 s (Edge 3) versus 0.3 s on the Flex-Dark and Edge 3 Pro. At a walking pace that's roughly a foot of travel. Fine at a feeder; costly at a crossing. Trigger speed explained.

• Carrier hopping. The $59.99 Flex-M is single-SIM. The M2 is dual-SIM for $20 more. If you've ever watched a camera sit at one bar, that $20 is the best money on this page.
• Screens and HD. None of these has an on-camera screen; HD photos cost extra on Spypoint and need Xtra on Tactacam.

Don't pay for solar you can't use
