Year one, in dollars
The one place the Edge 3 wins on cost is the middle: 1,000 images a month for $8.99 on Moultrie versus 1,000 photos for $7/mo annual ($10 monthly) on Spypoint Standard. Those are within two dollars. Everywhere else, Spypoint's free and Basic tiers or its annual discount pull ahead. Multiply by four cameras and the Edge 3 costs $431 more in year one on Standard than four Flex-M2s on the free tier. Whether 100 photos a month per camera is livable is the question; for a scrape or mineral site sending downsized photos it usually is, for a feeder at dusk it isn't.
Where the Edge is genuinely better
- No SD card. Built-in memory means no formatting, no card errors, no card left in the truck. That's the Edge's best argument and it's a real one; see the SD card guide for why.
- Four networks with Auto Connect versus dual-SIM. Both hop; Moultrie claims a broader list.
- Moultrie AI and Live Aim. Buck detection that switches to video, and live aiming in the app.
- USB-C ecosystem. The POWER MAG III (5,000 mAh, "18 AA" equivalent per Moultrie) and the 3.4W Solar Power Pack II.
Where it's worse: 0.50 s trigger, the slowest published figure among the cameras we ranked, and no AA tray, so you can't feed it from a gas station at 5 a.m. The Flex-M2 counters with a 0.4 s trigger, an AA tray or the LIT-22 pack (Spypoint claims up to 12 months on the M2), a 2-year warranty, and a GPS locator.
The $40 question: Flex-Dark
If you're at $79.99 and can stretch to $119.99, the Flex-Dark answers both cameras' weaknesses at once: 0.3 s trigger, 100 ft detection and flash, no-glow and low-glow LEDs, dual SIM, the same free plan, and Trailcampro's 2026 cellular flash-range win. Who should buy which
- Budget, one to four cameras, scrapes and mineral sites: Flex-M2 on the free tier.
- You hate SD cards and want the simplest camera: Edge 3, and budget $108 a year for it.
- Trail crossings: neither; spend $40 more on a Flex-Dark or $60 more on an Edge 3 Pro.
- Marginal signal: either hops carriers; the M2's dual SIM and the Edge's Auto Connect both beat a single-SIM camera.

For most buyers, yes: faster published trigger, dual SIM, 2-year warranty, free plan. The Edge 3 is better if built-in memory and Moultrie's app features matter more than $108 a year.
Which is cheaper to run, Spypoint or Moultrie?
Spypoint, at every tier except the 1,000-photo middle where they're within $2. Spypoint has a free 100-photo tier and annual discounts; Moultrie requires a paid plan and publishes no annual price for Standard or Unlimited.
Does the Spypoint Flex-M2 take AA batteries?
Yes; Spypoint's series page says up to 6 months on AAs or up to 12 months with the LIT-22 lithium pack.
Is the older Spypoint Flex-M still worth buying?
At $59.99 it's the cheapest name-brand cell cam, but it's single-SIM. For $20 more the M2 hops carriers and adds GPS; that's the better budget buy unless signal at your spot is strong and known.
