Best Spypoint cellular trail camera: which model to buy, and which you can actually get

Spypoint's argument has never really been the hardware. It is the only brand with a genuinely free plan tier, and dual-SIM radios in every FLEX camera. On the day we checked, four of its six FLEX models were out of stock at Spypoint's own store, so the shortlist is short and honest.

What you're actually buying when you buy Spypoint

Spypoint does not win spec-sheet fights. Trailcampro's scores for its in-stock cameras are 89/100 and 78/100, against 82 and 81 for Tactacam's current pair and 88 and 85 for Stealth Cam's. What Spypoint has that nobody else does is two things, and both of them are structural rather than cosmetic.

A genuinely free plan tier. Every Spypoint cellular camera comes with 100 photos a month for $0, per camera, indefinitely. No other brand we have verified offers this. Moultrie states outright that "all cellular connected devices require a paid subscription". Tactacam's cheapest tier is $5 a month or $55 a year. Stealth Cam's is $5 a month. On a spread of four cameras, Spypoint's free tier is the difference between $0 and $288 a year at the cheapest paid rates. If you run remote cameras that take forty photos a month, this is not a limitation, it is the whole product.

Dual-SIM hardware in every FLEX camera. Spypoint's product pages all carry the same line: "Dual-SIM technology automatically connects you to all major carriers and the strongest signal in the area", and the FLEX series page adds "cross-carrier coverage that automatically connects to the strongest signal" with a comparison-table row reading "Multi-Network (Dual SIM)". Tactacam uses one "Integrated SIM Card" with auto-selection; Moultrie and Stealth Cam publish coverage claims without naming a mechanism. Two physical SIM identities is a stronger position on a marginal set than one, and Spypoint is the only brand describing the hardware rather than the behavior. Our AT&T page works through why that matters.

Everything else about a Spypoint is competent rather than exceptional, and that is the honest summary. A two-year warranty on every camera, free shipping, and an Insiders Club that takes 20% off paid plans. If you want the fastest trigger or the best night image on this site, look at the fastest-trigger ranking or the night-picture ranking, and expect to leave Spypoint behind.

The whole FLEX lineup, and what was actually in stock

We checked every FLEX model on Spypoint's own store and at Trailcampro on 2026-09-26. This is what we found, and it is the single most useful table on this page, because a camera you cannot buy is not a recommendation.

Read from Spypoint's own product pages and Trailcampro's store search on 2026-09-26. Trailcampro scores are theirs, not ours. Stock in this category moves weekly; we will re-check before the next update to this page.

Two things are worth saying plainly about that table. First, the highest-scoring Spypoint at Trailcampro is the FLEX-S at 90/100, and it is sold out, so we do not rank it. Second, Spypoint's own store is out of stock on four of six FLEX models while a retailer has two of them, which is what end-of-season looks like rather than a product being discontinued. If you are reading this months later, check both places before you accept our shortlist.

How we ranked them

The six-metric cellular rubric from how we rank, applied within one brand:

  1. Trigger speed and recovery (20%). Both cameras here publish 0.3 s. Spypoint publishes no recovery time for either.
  2. Night image quality (20%). Both are no-glow to 100 ft with 40MP stills. The FLEX-DARK's page also lists a low-glow variant at the same range.
  3. Battery and solar life (20%). This is where the two separate: the S-DARK has integrated solar and the DARK does not.
  4. Real monthly plan cost (20%). Identical across the lineup, and Spypoint's strongest card. See the plan section below.
  5. Detection range and field of view (10%), app and reliability (10%). Both 100 ft; both dual SIM; both two-year warranty.

Every figure below links to Spypoint's own product page or to Trailcampro's published measurements and scores, with the date we read it.

The two, side by side

Blank cells mean Spypoint publishes nothing for that row; we don't fill them in.

For the full spec fight between the FLEX-M2, the FLEX-DARK and the FLEX-S-DARK, including the flash and resolution differences we have compressed here, read our dedicated FLEX-M2 vs FLEX-DARK vs FLEX-S-DARK head-to-head. This page is the buying decision; that one is the comparison. And if you want the single-model detail on the entry camera, the FLEX-M2 review covers it, with the caveat that we could not confirm stock for it anywhere on 2026-09-26.

The free tier, and what it really covers

TierMonthlyAnnual billingAllowanceNotes

Basic$5/mo$4/mo ($48/yr)250 photos/mo
Standard$10/mo$7/mo ($84/yr)1,000 photos/mo
Premium$15/mo$10/mo ($120/yr)Unlimited photos
  • Full-HD photo package: $5 per 50 photos
  • Full-HD video package: $5 per 20 videos
One plan per camera. No activation fees. Annual billing lowers the effective monthly price; Insiders Club members get 20% off paid plans. Prices as of Sep 21, 2026, read from Spypoint's plan page. Confirm before you buy; brands change plans without notice.

The number that should decide your brand is the first one, and the honest question is whether 100 photos a month is enough at your sets. On a remote trail with nobody walking it, yes, comfortably. On a mineral site in July, you will burn it in four days. Two things help: Spypoint lets you change tier month to month, so you can run Standard in summer and free for the rest of the year, and its full-HD photos and videos are sold as packages ($5 per 50 photos, $5 per 20 videos) rather than bundled, which keeps the base tiers cheap and the HD costs visible.

The one place Spypoint's pricing stops being the cheapest is unlimited. At $15 a month per camera, or $10 with annual billing, four cameras on Premium is $480 a year, which is more than Tactacam's unlimited at $49 a month for four. What the spec sheet supports

  • Integrated solar with no cable to route or panel to aim
  • Same 0.3 s / 100 ft / dual-LED spec as the Flex-Dark
  • Free 100-photo tier; $10/mo annual unlimited
  • $149.99 at Spypoint, under the Moultrie Edge 4 Solar

Where it falls short

  • A camera-mounted panel only works where the camera faces the sun; shaded sets still starve
  • No published recovery time or battery capacity figure
  • Fits CAMLOCKbox box 11, a different box from the Flex-Dark, so boxes don't swap
  • Out of stock at Spypoint on 2026-10-09; Trailcampro had it at $169.95 and Amazon stock was marked up well above list

Skip this if…

…your sets are in deep timber with no direct sun; a separate 10W panel you can aim (SPLB-22) beats a built-in one there.

Buyer's guide: getting the most out of a Spypoint

Start on the free tier even if you intend to pay

There is no reason to buy a plan before you know the camera checks in from the tree you chose. Activate on free, hang it, give it a week, then upgrade if the photos justify it. This is the cheapest diagnostic in the whole category and it exists only on this brand. If it does not check in, read camera not sending pictures before you assume the camera is faulty.

Change tier by season, not once a year

Spypoint's tiers are month to month. A mineral site in July wants Standard at $10 a month (1,000 photos); the same camera in February wants the free tier. Nobody at Spypoint will suggest this to you. Over four cameras and a year it is the difference between $480 and something closer to $120. Our Spypoint plans explained page has every tier and the annual-billing arithmetic.

Budget for HD packages separately, or don't use them

Spypoint's base tiers deliver standard-definition photos; full-HD photos are $5 per 50 and full-HD videos $5 per 20. That is fine as an occasional "let me see that properly" and expensive as a habit. Decide which you are before the season starts, and if HD on demand is central to how you scout, price a Tactacam Xtra add-on against it in plans compared.

Join the Insiders Club if you're paying at all

Spypoint's own plan page states 20% off paid plans for Insiders Club members. On Premium at $15 a month that is $36 a year per camera. We do not earn anything from mentioning it; it is just money most people leave on the table.

Solar, and what it does and doesn't remove

The S-DARK's integrated panel removes the battery visit, not the camera visit. You will still walk in for a spider on the lens, a strap that slipped or a card that needs formatting. If the camera is far enough out that those trips matter, our remote-areas page covers the whole failure set, and best solar cellular cameras compares the S-DARK against the other brands' solar models. Spypoint also sells the SPLB-22 10W lithium battery solar panel and the LIT-22 rechargeable pack if you want to power a FLEX-DARK the same way; see our panel ranking.

Box it, because these are the cameras people leave out longest

A free plan encourages you to leave a camera up all year, which is exactly the camera that gets found. CAMLOCKbox makes a Spypoint-specific security box, and our security box ranking and lock and cable ranking cover the fit. The no-glow flash on both picks helps here too.

When to buy a different brand instead

If the set is a rut crossing and you need a sub-0.3 s trigger with a published recovery time, if night image detail at distance is the whole reason you are upgrading, or if you want unlimited photos across four or more cameras, Spypoint is not the answer and we would rather say so. Our best cellular trail cameras ranking and the three-brand comparison put it against the alternatives, and Spypoint vs Stealth Cam runs the closest fight in detail.

How we scored this

The research behind these picks

Every pick here is built from documented evidence: the maker's published trigger speed, flash type, battery configuration and detection range; each brand's plan tiers verified on its own plan page and turned into the real monthly cost at one and four cameras; the independent shootouts (Trailcampro, Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, TechGearLab) cited by name for the measurements they published; and a public rubric applied the same way to every model. Every figure links to where it came from, so you can check our work in one click.

Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Corrections & updates

  • First published. Every price and stock status read from Spypoint's own product pages and Trailcampro's store search on this date. The FLEX-M, FLEX-M2, FLEX-S and FLEX G-36 were out of stock and are listed, not ranked; the FLEX-RANGE is unreleased.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best Spypoint cellular trail camera?

The FLEX-S-DARK. It has integrated solar, a 940nm no-glow flash to 100 ft, a 0.3 s trigger, 40MP stills and dual-SIM cross-carrier hardware, and it carried Trailcampro's highest score of any in-stock Spypoint at 89/100. Spypoint's own store had it at $129.99, reduced from $149.99, with an Add to Cart button on 2026-09-26.

Is the Spypoint free plan actually free?

Yes. Spypoint's plan page lists a Free tier at $0 a month for 100 photos per camera, and its product pages state that "every SPYPOINT cellular camera comes with 100 FREE photos a month". No other brand we have verified offers this; Moultrie states that all cellular connected devices require a paid subscription. The limit is real, though: 100 photos a month is enough for a quiet remote trail and nowhere near enough for a summer mineral site.

Which Spypoint cameras are in stock?

On 2026-09-26, the FLEX-S-DARK was in stock at Spypoint ($129.99) and at Trailcampro ($169.95), and the FLEX-DARK was in stock at Trailcampro ($119.95) while out of stock at Spypoint. The FLEX-M, FLEX-M2, FLEX-S and FLEX G-36 were all out of stock at Spypoint, Trailcampro or both, and the FLEX-RANGE is listed as coming in 2026. Stock in this category moves weekly, so check both places.

Is Spypoint a good brand?

It is the best value brand and not the best hardware brand, and those are different questions. Trailcampro scores its in-stock cameras 89/100 and 78/100, against 88 and 85 for Stealth Cam's current pair. What Spypoint uniquely has is a free plan tier and dual-SIM radios in every FLEX camera, which between them make it the cheapest brand to run and the most forgiving on marginal signal. If you want the fastest trigger or the best night image on this site, look elsewhere.

FLEX-S-DARK or FLEX-DARK?

The S-DARK, unless price is the only consideration. On Spypoint's own store the gap was $10 and the S-DARK has a solar panel built in, plus a higher independent score (89/100 against 78/100). Buy the FLEX-DARK when you want three or four cameras at $119.95 each on sets you visit anyway, or when the S-DARK is out of stock.

Does a Spypoint work on Verizon or AT&T?

It works on whichever is stronger at the set, and you do not choose. Every FLEX camera carries the line "Dual-SIM technology automatically connects you to all major carriers and the strongest signal in the area", and the series page calls it "cross-carrier coverage". Spypoint names no carrier anywhere. Our Verizon and AT&T pages cover how each brand handles this.
