Best Moultrie trail cameras: which Edge to buy, and what Moultrie Mobile really costs
Moultrie now sells one camera family with five variants, and the spec that separates them is not megapixels. It is trigger speed, flash type and whether power comes from AA batteries, a USB-C pack or a built-in panel. The plan is identical across all five, which makes the choice simpler than it looks.

The Moultrie lineup in 2026
Moultrie has collapsed its cellular range into one family. Every camera on this page is an Edge: all four major networks with Auto Connect, built-in memory instead of an SD card slot, the Moultrie Mobile app, Moultrie AI image tagging, and a 50° field of view. That shared platform is why “which Moultrie trail camera” is a narrower question than it looks. You are not choosing between ecosystems. You are choosing between a slow trigger and a fast one, low-glow and no-glow, and three different ways of feeding the camera power.
Those three power routes are worth naming before the ranking, because they decide how often you walk in. The Edge 3 and Edge 3 Pro run USB-C: a POWER MAG pack or the 3.4W Solar Power Pack II is the whole power plan. The Edge 4 adds an AA tray alongside USB-C, so you can run it on lithium primaries if that is what you have in the truck. The Edge Solar and Edge 4 Solar have a panel and a rechargeable lithium pack built into the housing, and Moultrie states no AA batteries are needed at all.
What separates the five
Trigger speed is the first filter. Moultrie publishes 0.30 s for the Edge 3 Pro, 0.40 s for the Edge 4, Edge 4 Solar and Edge Solar, and 0.50 s for the Edge 3. On a feeder or a scrape, nothing here is too slow. On a travel corridor where a deer crosses the detection lane at walking speed, the difference between 0.30 s and 0.50 s is the difference between a shoulder and a tail. If your sets are trails rather than bait, the Pro is the only Edge we would run.
Flash type is the second. The Edge 3 Pro is the only no-glow camera in the family; every other Edge is low-glow, which means a faint red shine at the LED array when it fires at night. That matters for two reasons: animals that have been photographed before learn the glow, and so do people who walk past your camera. If the set is anywhere near a road, a gate or a property line, the no-glow premium is the cheapest theft insurance Moultrie sells. The longer version of this argument is in no-glow vs low-glow.
Resolution is the third, and it is the least useful. Moultrie publishes 50MP for the Edge 3 Pro and 40MP for the rest, and describes the top figure as interpolated: the sensor does not capture 50 million real pixels, software scales up to that number. The 1440p video stream on the Pro is a real advantage over 1080p on the others. The megapixel figure is not. See what trail camera megapixels actually mean.

What Moultrie Mobile actually costs
Moultrie bills per camera and has no free tier. Standard is $8.99 a month per camera for 1,000 images, Unlimited is $12.99 a month per camera, and the Edge 3 Pro additionally offers a Pro Series tier at $22.99. There is no account-wide allowance to spread across a set, so the monthly cost scales linearly with the number of cameras you hang.
Standard at $8.99 is the tier most people should start on. A thousand images a month sounds thin until you remember that a camera on a funnel with sensible PIR settings sends a few dozen photos a day, not a few hundred. If you blow through the allowance it is usually because the camera is firing on moving grass, and that is a settings problem rather than a plan problem — see trail camera false triggers.
Which Edge for which set
- Trail crossing, pinch point, scrape line. Edge 3 Pro. The 0.30 s trigger and the no-glow array are the two things a trail set needs, and no other Edge has either.
- Feeder, food plot, water hole. Edge Solar. Animals stand still at bait, so a 0.40 s trigger loses nothing, and the integrated panel means you stop visiting.
- Set with no signal at the truck. Edge 4. Offline settings let you configure the camera before you have a bar, which is the one thing the rest of the family cannot do.
- One camera you want to do everything. Edge 4 Solar. GPS, Buck Shot, Live Aim and a panel in one housing, at the top of Moultrie's price range.
- A second or third camera on a tight budget. Edge 3. Accept the 0.50 s trigger, put it on bait, and spend the saving on the plan.
If you are deciding between the three non-solar models specifically, the head-to-head is at Edge 3 vs Edge 3 Pro vs Edge 4. If you are comparing Moultrie against the other big ecosystems rather than within it, start at Spypoint vs Tactacam vs Moultrie.

Buyer's guide: buying Moultrie without buying twice
The plan outlives the camera, so price the set and not the box
Moultrie hardware is among the cheapest cellular gear you can buy, and Moultrie plans are among the more expensive at scale because they are strictly per camera. Four cameras on Unlimited is $623.52 a year. If your plan is four or more cameras, run the same arithmetic on Spypoint's annual pricing and Stealth Cam's descending multi-camera schedule before you commit. The math for every brand is in plans for multiple cameras.
No SD card is a real feature, not a marketing line
Every Edge writes to built-in memory. You cannot forget the card, corrupt it, seat it badly or pull the wrong one, and those four failures account for most of the trail camera seasons people lose. It also means there is no local backup, so a camera that is stolen takes its photos with it. Lock it up: security boxes and locks and cables.
USB-C power is a commitment on the Edge 3 and Edge 3 Pro
Neither has an AA tray. The POWER MAG III is a 5,000 mAh / 54 Wh pack that Moultrie rates at 18 AA equivalent, and the 3.4W Solar Power Pack II trickle-charges it. Budget for one of the two when you buy the camera rather than after the first dead-battery alert. The alternatives are in external battery packs.
Solar is about sun hours, not watts
The Edge Solar carries a 2,600 mAh pack behind a small integrated panel. In a north-facing hardwood bottom in December that is not much reserve. Both solar Edges keep a USB-C input, so a POWER MAG behind the panel turns a marginal set into a reliable one. The honest assessment of integrated panels is in are solar trail cameras worth it.
Buy the flash you need, then the trigger, then everything else
The ranking above is really that sentence. Flash type and trigger speed are physical properties you cannot fix later. Buck Shot, GPS and AI tagging are software, and Moultrie keeps shipping software to older models anyway.
How we scored this
The research behind these picks
Every pick here is built from documented evidence: the maker's published trigger speed, flash type, battery configuration and detection range; each brand's plan tiers verified on its own plan page and turned into the real monthly cost at one and four cameras; the independent shootouts (Trailcampro, Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, TechGearLab) cited by name for the measurements they published; and a public rubric applied the same way to every model. Every figure links to where it came from, so you can check our work in one click.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Questions
Frequently asked
What is the best Moultrie trail camera?
The Moultrie Edge 3 Pro. It is the only Edge with a no-glow flash and a 0.30 s trigger, it publishes 100 ft for both detection and flash, it records 1440p video, and it won Trailcampro's 2026 cellular detection shootout. The trade is USB-C power only and a plan that starts at $8.99 a month for that one camera.
Do Moultrie trail cameras need a subscription?
Yes. Every Edge is a cellular camera and Moultrie Mobile has no free tier: Standard is $8.99 a month per camera for 1,000 images and Unlimited is $12.99 a month per camera. If you want a camera with no recurring bill, Moultrie is the wrong brand — see cellular cameras with no monthly fee.
Do Moultrie Edge cameras take an SD card?
No. Every Edge model records to built-in memory, and Moultrie does not fit an SD slot. Photos live in the Moultrie Mobile app, which is also where you download the originals.
Which carrier do Moultrie trail cameras use?
Moultrie lists all four major networks with Auto Connect: the camera picks the strongest signal available where it hangs rather than being tied to one carrier at purchase. The carrier question in general is covered in which carriers trail cameras use.
Is the Moultrie Edge Solar worth it over the Edge 3?
On most sets, yes. The Edge Solar is faster (0.40 s against 0.50 s), includes a panel and a 2,600 mAh lithium pack, and needs no AA batteries at all. The Edge 3 is cheaper up front and then costs you a POWER MAG or a pack of lithiums you have to walk in and replace.
How many cameras can I run on one Moultrie Mobile plan?
One. Moultrie bills per camera with no shared allowance, so four cameras on Unlimited is $51.96 a month. Brands that bill account-wide work out cheaper past two cameras; the comparison is in plans for multiple cameras.
